The Galaxy Report brings you weekly features and summaries of the discoveries, people and events that are changing our knowledge of the Universe and the future of the human species curated and created by the editorial team at The Daily Galaxy-Great Discoveries Channel.

The Daily Galaxy is a great place to get your regular fix of everything cosmic and mind bending, with a little dose of controversy on the side.”

Dan Hooper, author of At the Edge of Time, and Senior Scientist and the Head of the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and associate professor, University of Chicago. Dan focuses on the interface between particle physics and cosmology.

The Daily Galaxy provides insightful updates on our understanding of the Universe, the island of cosmic knowledge in our vast ocean of ignorance.”

Avi Loeb, former chair (2011-2020) of the astronomy department at Harvard University, founding director of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Avi also chairs the Board on Physics and Astronomy of the National Academies and the advisory board for the Breakthrough Starshot project, and is a member of President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. He is the intrepid author of Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, published in January 2021.

A Cosmic Perspective in Our Anthropocene Epoch

We view our role as "DJs” of cosmic content. Google's algorithms extend the reach of our mind. But the thoughtful selection --the creation, curation and editing that goes beyond algorithms-- of what's important in the news of space and science that has the capacity to provide clues to the mystery of our existence and add a much needed cosmic perspective in our current Anthropocene Epoch.

Launched in March 2007, The Daily Galaxy -Great Discoveries Channel is an eclectic text, audio, and video presentation of news and original insights on the discoveries, people, and events changing our knowledge of our planet and the universe. The Daily Galaxy is built on the vision that science, space exploration, the search for extraterrestrial life, and the environment and their expression in news, film, video, and events will dominate popular culture in the 21st century.

Kudos from the Media

In 2010, The Guardian selected The Daily Galaxy as one of “the hottest science blogs on the world wide web”. CNET has identified The Daily Galaxy as one of the “18 cool sites and apps that teach you about space.” The Daily Galaxy has also been listed in Feedspot.com “Top 100 Science Blogs, Websites, and Influencers in 2021.”

Editorial Team–Unusual Expertise

Beginning January 1st, 2021, each of our daily news stories are edited and vetted along with original insights and expert commentary, with bylines, by a team of exceptionally accomplished scientists:

Editor, Jackie Faherty, astrophysicist, Senior Scientist with the American Museum of Natural History. Jackie was formerly a NASA Hubble Fellow at the Carnegie Institution for Science. Aside from a love of scientific research, she is a passionate educator and can often be found giving public lectures in the Hayden Planetarium. Her research team has won multiple grants from NASA, NSF, and the Heising Simons foundation to support projects focused on characterizing planet-like objects. She has also co-founded the popular citizen science project entitled Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 which invites the general public to help scan the solar neighborhood for previously missed cold worlds. A Google Scholar, Faherty has over 100 peer reviewed articles in astrophysical journals and has been an invited speaker at universities and conferences across the globe. Jackie received the 2020 Vera Rubin Early Career Prize from the American Astronomical Society, an award that recognizes scientists who have made an impact in the field of dynamical astronomy and the 2021 Robert H Goddard Award for science accomplishments.

Maxwell Moe, astrophysicist, NASA Einstein Fellow at the University of Arizona. He received his Ph.D. in astronomy from Harvard University in 2015. Max can be found two nights a week probing the mysteries of the Universe at the Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Avi Shporer, Research Scientist, MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research. A Google Scholar, Avi was formerly a NASA Sagan Fellow at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). His motto, not surprisingly, is a quote from Carl Sagan: “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”

Miguel Zumalacarregui was a Marie Curie Global Fellow at the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics prior to joining The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Einstein Institute) in 2021. A Google Scholar, his research is directed towards finding new theoretical and observational approaches to the problem of cosmic acceleration, the nature of dark matter, and their connections to fundamental physics.
